Riverside in Holland
Oil on board
35 x 27cm
51 x 41 cm (frame)
William MacGeorge RSA (1861-1931), Dutch maritime scene, probably Amsterdam. Old label verso reads ‘a riverside in Holland W. S. MacGeorge’. The work is signed W. S. Macgeorge bottom right. The work is very similar in size, colouring and composition to an oil on board scene of Amsterdam harbour that forms part of the Macgeorge bequest to Penston House Council Offices, Scotland.
The work is in great condition. I’m unsure of the location but the artist was known to have spent some time in the Netherlands and Belgium and lived in Antwerp for three years as a young man.
William Stewart MacGeorge was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was born in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. To quote the Royal Scottish Academy website ‘For a long series of years he lived in Kirkcudbright in summer and in Edinburgh in winter. Most of his subjects were of Galloway, but he also painted in the Highlands, and in 1913 his works in the Academy were of Venice and Verona.’
