Artist Biography

Henry Moore (1898–1986) was one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and a leading figure in modern British art. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire and the son of a miner, Moore studied at the Leeds School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art in London. He rose to international prominence in the 1930s and became particularly celebrated after World War II for his monumental bronze sculptures placed in public spaces around the world.

Moore’s work is characterized by abstracted human forms, especially reclining figures and mother-and-child groupings, often pierced or hollowed to explore interior and exterior space. His artistic language drew inspiration from natural forms—bones, stones, shells—and from non-Western sculpture, blending abstraction with a profound sense of humanity.

In addition to sculpture, Moore was an accomplished draftsman and printmaker. His works on paper, including etchings and lithographs, demonstrate the same structural clarity and sensitivity to mass that define his sculpture. Today, his works are held in major museum collections worldwide, and his legacy is preserved through the Henry Moore Foundation in Hertfordshire, England.
