Artist Biography
Sir Terry Frost (1915–2003) was a leading figure in 20th-century British abstract art. Born in Leamington Spa and later closely associated with Cornwall, he began painting while a prisoner of war during the Second World War, after meeting Adrian Heath, who introduced him to modern art.
After the war, Frost studied at Birmingham College of Art and Camberwell School of Art before settling in St Ives, where he worked for Barbara Hepworth and became part of the influential modernist community alongside artists such as Ben Nicholson and Patrick Heron. He developed a distinctive abstract style marked by bold geometric forms, arcs and circles, and vibrant colour inspired by the Cornish landscape.
Alongside his practice, Frost taught at institutions including the University of Reading. His work was widely exhibited internationally and is held in major collections such as Tate and the Museum of Modern Art. Elected a Royal Academician in 1992 and knighted in 1998, he remains a central figure in post-war British abstraction.
