Rowland Hilder (1905–1993) was a British artist, teacher, and author born in New York City to parents originally from Kent. His family returned to England during the First World War, where both his father and school art teacher encouraged his artistic talent.

Hilder studied at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he was influenced by illustrator Edmund J. Sullivan. He later married fellow art student and botanical artist Edith Blenkiron.

After college, Hilder worked as an illustrator, producing artwork for books including Treasure Island and Precious Bane. During this time, he developed a strong interest in landscape painting.

Hilder became best known for his watercolour landscapes, especially scenes of the River Thames and the Shoreham Valley in Kent. His paintings often celebrated peaceful rural life, featuring snowy fields, rivers, farms, and traditional countryside scenes.

Although he also painted in oils, watercolour was his preferred medium. Influenced by the English watercolour tradition, Hilder taught art at Farnham School of Art and later at Goldsmiths. He also wrote books on watercolour techniques, including Starting Watercolour and Expressing Land, Sea and Sky.

Hilder’s achievements were widely recognised: he became a member of the Royal Institute of Water Colours in 1938, served as its president from 1964, and was awarded an OBE in 1986. He continued painting until his death in 1993.
