Nikos Nikolaou (1909–1986) was one of the most important figures in modern Greek art. Born on the island of Hydra, he studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and became associated with Greece’s celebrated “Generation of the ’30s,” alongside artists and writers who shaped modern Greek culture. Nikolaou was known for his paintings, sculptures, and engravings, often inspired by the light, landscapes, and people of Greece.

In the 1960s, Nikolaou settled on the island of Aegina with his wife Angela. Their seaside home and studio soon became a gathering place for artists, poets, and intellectuals, including painter Yiannis Moralis, sculptor Christos Kapralos, and poet Odysseas Elytis. The house was famous for its warm hospitality, creative energy, and long evenings of conversation overlooking the sea.

Today, Nikolaou’s former home and atelier have been carefully restored as Nikolaou Residence, a unique accommodation and artistic retreat on the island of Aegina. The property preserves the atmosphere of the artist’s original studio while offering guest suites surrounded by olive, fig, and pistachio trees. Many original artworks, furniture pieces, and personal objects remain in situ.
