Kenneth Stephen Done AM is an Australian artist best known for his exuberant use of colour and his distinctive visual language, which has become synonymous with contemporary Australian culture. Born in Sydney, Done left school at fourteen to study at the National Art School, East Sydney (1954–1959). In the 1960s he worked internationally with the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson in New York and London, before returning to Australia in 1969 to pursue painting full time. He became a full-time artist in 1975 and held his first solo exhibition in Sydney in 1980.
His work has been exhibited in over 100 solo exhibitions, with work shown extensively throughout Australia, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Major exhibitions include a retrospective at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney (1994), exhibitions in Paris (1996), London and Los Angeles (2000), and the touring exhibition Paintings You Probably Haven’t Seen (2019–2022), which travelled to 11 regional galleries across Australia.
Done played a central role in the visual identity of Expo ’88 in Brisbane, creating the iconic Children of the World façade and large-scale entrance and exit statements for the Australian Pavilion—among the most photographed artworks of the event. These works were fully restored in 2018 for the 30th anniversary of Expo ’88. He was also commissioned to create artworks for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Beyond fine art, Done co-founded Done Art and Design with his wife Judy, producing clothing and homewares that brought contemporary Australian art into everyday life. He has been a UNICEF Australia Goodwill Ambassador since 1988 and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contributions to art and culture.
