He studied at Grimsby School of Art and Leicester College of Art before establishing his career in Newark, Nottinghamshire, where he taught art for approximately 30 years. He later lived and worked in Welbourn, Lincolnshire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eBrannan is best known for his paintings of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, particularly coastal scenes, beaches and dunes, townscapes, architecture and still life. His work combines a strong sense of place with influences from the French Post-Impressionists and the still-life tradition of Chardin. His paintings of Newark were an important part of his practice, alongside his continuing interest in the Lincolnshire coast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eBrannan was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1960, the year of his first London exhibition, and later served as President of the Lincolnshire and South Humberside Artists.
