Born in Barcelona in 1913, he initially trained as a house painter before studying at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. During the Spanish Civil War, he fought on the Republican side and later went into exile in France in 1939, where much of his artistic career developed.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Clavé gained recognition for his theatrical set and costume designs, especially for ballet and opera productions in Paris. Over time, his painting evolved toward highly textured, collage-like compositions influenced by Cubism, Surrealism, and Art Informel. Common themes in his work included kings, warriors, masks, and still-life imagery.

Clavé exhibited internationally and became one of the most respected postwar Spanish artists working in France. His works are held in major museums and collections across Europe and the United States. He died in Saint-Tropez, France, in 2005.

Please note that orders from outside the United Kingdom may require additional shipping and customs charges, please contact us for more information.
